- Excellent book - loved it Review by Bob Groh
-
Rating Got this book a month or so ago and absolutely love it. Have read it several times as I 'evolve' my plans for 'my' new work bench.
The book is more than simply a book outlining one workbench construction project - it covers the fundamentals of what a wood working bench is and what it needs to be and then proceeds to present several (10?) designs by both the author and others. Each design is then critiqued by the author and/or the builder - what worked, what didn't work and what could be done better.
There are chapters on accessories - vises, bench dogs, etc. Sources are provided for many of the parts and pieces being used. And it goes on and on.
Again my bottom line: if you like woodworking and/or like the idea of having a really, really nice workbench - buy a copy of this book. You'll get a lot out of it.(Posted on 10/20/12)
- Excellent Reading - and Practical Review by Steve Barnhart

This book is well written and illustrated, enjoyable to read and very informative. The inclusion of many bench designs and critiques are useful for one who has not had experience using different benches. Though Christopher Schwartz is responsible for the bulk of the content (and it's good!), you also get the perspective of other Popular Woodworking editors discussing their own designs. As an amateur woodworker, I'm motivated and now informed to build my first workbench. Thanks to the insight given in this book, I hope to avoid many pitfalls. I will likely start with the sawbench plans given at the end of the book - excellent bonus material for an entirely worthwhile read.

- Another great book by Schwarz Review by Jason Dinger

Having read Chris' first workbench book and countless articles / blogs he's written, I ordered this one as soon as it was available. Got it about a week ago, read through it once, and I'm now going back to rereading specific sections as I make upgrades to my current bench.Chris has a no-nonsense, straight forward writing style that not only equips the reader with the information, but also explains the hows and whys of specific techniques, wood species choices, project plans, etc.
