- A fantastic resource, I've been seeking exactly this! Review by Fitzhugh
I've sought out every book on making your own tools I can find and this the top of my list.
John Wilson takes a down to earth approach to making real, useful tools. He shows a number of ways to make handplanes of various sorts, bench, block, scrub, compass etc with a variety of adjustment mechanisms and construction methods, plus shoulder, router, smoothing, etc. planes. He also covers many other tools: draw knife (I love how mine turned out!!), spokeshaves, adzes, travishers, bowsaw...
Another portion covers making and heat treating the blades using a minimal setup, plus how to solder your own bandsaw blades, which I thought was cool to learn. There is a third section on workbenches, saw bench, toolboxes and such.
Now, in addition to the straight content I d impressed by his emphasis on helping others learn. He says in the intro that it is fine to share copies for nonprofit use, like giving copies of a section to your club. That is so different than most. I also found him very helpful when I called with a question. My copy, ordered from him, included a new section printed separately with additional tools and a couple improvements. I assume it is either included our available for download.
Clear writing covering the steps and concepts, great layout and photos.
My favorite to making book out of many.
