Handplane Basics - A Better Way to Use Bench Planes

By Christopher Schwarz

Format: DVD

SKU# Z6075

While bench planes are the most fundamental handplanes in your shop, they also are the most vexing. Ask two woodworkers how to choose, set up and use your bench planes and you'll get three answers.

After years of historical research and practical bench experience, Editor Christopher Schwarz has found a way to simplify the convoluted bench plane system so you can think for yourself when it comes to these tools. After viewing this DVD you'll know how to select the right size plane for your work. You'll know how to sharpen and set it up so it does the job at hand. And you'll learn how to use the plane so you make perfectly flat and gleaming panels (with the minimum amount of effort).

This DVD doesn't simply spout off a new idiosyncratic way to work with bench planes. Instead Schwarz explains how all the systems work so you can immediately see their strengths and weaknesses and exploit them so you'll do better work.

"Handplane Basics" puts into practice all of the principles explained in the story "Bench Planes: The System of Three" in this issue of Woodworking Magazine and dives further into the topics of sharpening, setup and use. If you are confused or frustrated by your bench planes, this DVD is just the ticket.

I'm Picky Review by Tom

When I want to know something I research it to death. Tons of articles and books and DVDs. Having decided to get into hand planes I did my thing. This is the absolute best thing available. Clear, complete, and concise.

Excellent primer Review by Tom Moeller

This is an excellent first dvd to buy for both the novice and intermediate wood worker. It covers all the basics from plane description and choice to setup and use. I found it to be a spring board or foundation for more inquiry and education. The clear and concise information has dramatically improved my ability to acquire and use different planes.

Don't know what you are getting Review by ko

Unlike a book. These dvd give no clue as to how good they are. I wish they would post index and samples of what is contained in the dvd. That way I would know if I wanted to buy it. Right now your buying on blind faith that it is worth the money.

A Better Way For Sure Review by Michael

Before owning the DVD I always found myself laying aside my planes in frustration after trying to use them on projects, vowing to someday take the time to learn how to properly add their use to my arsenal of tools. Now I can say with confidence that the day has finally come where I feel like I'm headed in the right direction. I'm by no means an expert and may never be but I can honestly say that the information on this DVD has allowed me to increase my skills exponentially. From the first time I watched it I could feel the tumblers clicking in to place as the mystical secrets of hand planning were finally beginning to unlock themselves. I found the style of teaching easy to understand and absorb and have found myself referring back to it multiple times as a refresher.

Handplane Basics Review by Kenneth Murrell

This is an excellent DVD. Of all the videos and demonstrations I have seen, as well at books on handplanes this is the best. All the information that one needs to set up and use bench planes is here in this DVD. One complaint. The DVD did arrive 'bent' due to poor packaging. However after bending it back it did play.
